Project Overview:

In December 2022, an innovative initiative was launched to provide solar solutions to 181 educational institutions in Gilgit-Baltistan, at a total project cost of 263.822 million rupees. This project, in collaboration with the Telephone Industries of Pakistan (TIP), aimed to install 5KW solar systems in each of these schools. By December 30, 2023, we embarked on a mission to revolutionize the way these schools harnessed and managed energy resources which will benefit approximately 60,000 students and 2000 teachers.

Impact of the Project:

Efficiently Combating Power Cuts: In a region where power cuts frequently disrupted the normal school routine, the installation of solar panels became a game-changer.

Significant Monthly Savings: High electricity bills had long been a burden for these institutions, primarily relying on the grid. Solar energy brought about remarkable cost reductions.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable: By lessening reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels and the conventional grid, these schools transitioned to a more eco-friendly and sustainable approach. They not only became torchbearers of environmental responsibility but also curtailed pollution and reduced their carbon footprint.

Challenges:

The Gilgit-Baltistan Government has converted 948 schools into “smart schools,” but only 181 have been solarized. The significant investment in establishing smart schools might not fully realize its potential due to persistent load shedding. This ongoing challenge underscores the essential need for support.

Limited Solar Coverage: While the 181 schools benefiting from solar energy have experienced substantial improvements, the vast majority of schools in the region remain untouched by this transformation, leading to an educational divide.

Smart School Investment: The government’s substantial investment in establishing “smart schools” may not be fully realized without a consistent and uninterrupted power supply, highlighting the urgency of expanding solar coverage.

Support for the Project Extension:

The financial status of the Gilgit-Baltistan government does not currently allow for the extension of this transformative project to more schools, making external support crucial. With the undeniable impact of the project, we earnestly seek your support to extend this transformative initiative to an additional five schools in Gilgit-Baltistan. The estimated cost for this extension is approximately 7.3 million rupees. By joining hands with us, you can help sustain and amplify the positive change we’ve initiated.
